CORDILLERA HUAYHUASH

THE CORDILLERA HUAYHUASH - CAJATAMBO TREK

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult.
DURATION : 10 Days
DEPARTS : 07:00 a.m.
RETURNS : 04:00 p.m. After 10 days
Max. altitude Trek : 4.750 m
Trekking Season: May to September.

Itinerary:

Day 1:  Huaraz – Chuiquian -  Llamac.  
In the morning we arrange transportation from Huaraz to the small village of Llamac. Our drive will take us first to the town of Chiquian from where after a short rest we will continue to Llamac. Camp (3250 m/ 10,660 ft).

Day 2: Llamac – Jahuacocha.
From Llamac we will start our circuit, hiking towards the beautiful Jahuacocha Lake. The trail follows the shores of the Llamac River, crossing beautiful natural gardens to finally arrive to the impressive camp site at 4050m of altitude (13,120ft). From here we have a great view of the amazing Cordillera de Huayhuash and its impressive mountains: Yerupaja, Jirishanca, Rasac and others.

Day 3: Jahuacocha - Cuartelhuain:
Continuing our circuit on the left side of Jahuacocha and Laguna Solteracocha, we will ascend to the Sambuya pass at 4,750 m (15,580 ft). >From here the view is spectacular with the icy and rocky mountains in front. Then we will descend to the valley arriving to our camp site in Cuartelhuain at 4100m (13450 ft).

Day 4: Cuartelhuain – Mitucocha:
Today we will cross our second pass known as Caccananpunta at 4750m (15580ft), a spectacular high Andean pass. Great views of the east site of Huayhuash range. Later on we will arrive to our campsite located close to Laguna Mitucocha at 4100 m (13450ft).

Day 5: Laguna  Mitucocha – Laguna Carhuacocha: 
After breakfast our trekking heads towards the next pass at Carhuac Punta at 4600m/15090ft).  Later on we will descend to our camp located at the beautiful Carhuacocha lagoon. Today will be a short day, thus in the afternoon we can relax on the lake area where you have nice opportunities for fishing.

Day 6: Resting day.
Today we will recover our strength resting at this amazing place. Perhaps we can climb one of the many smaller peaks in the area or just relax.

Day 7: Carhuacocha – Huayhuash:
Today we will cross Atocshayco pass at 4800m/15250ft with marvelous views of the Siula and Quesillococha lagoons and the surrounding mountains: Carnicero, Siula, Yerupaja south face, etc. Then we go down towards our next camp located close to the small settlement of Huayhuash.

Day 8: Huayhuash – Viconga Lagoon – Pumarinri camp:
Today we cross the Portachuelo the Huayhuash pass (4600m – 15088ft) heading towards the Viconga Lake. We will have great views of the Raura Cordillera. Then we continue our hike until we reach our next camp site at 4150m (13610ft) just at the hot water springs. Enjoy a relaxing hot water bath.

Day 9: Pumarinri camp – Paso Cajatambo:  
Following the west side of Pumarinri River gorge we head down and then we climb to our last high pass known as San Cristobal pass at 4150 m/13612 ft). From here we trek down to the lower valleys until we reach the town of Cajatambo at 3380 m/ 11087 ft. Stay overnight in a local small hotel.

Day 10: Cajatambo village – Lima:  
In Cajatambo we say good by to our helpers and mule keepers and then we will be transported back to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima we transfer to your hotel.

The Expedition Includes:
- Pick up and translate to the hostal- buss station.l
- 02 nights in a Huaraz hostel, breakfast is included.
- 09 days camping.
- Specialized walking guides (Spanish and English speaking)
-  with a First Aid Kit
- Camping Equipment (Mattress, Tent, Cooking tent, Cooking utensils, toilet)
- A specialized cook, catering for both meat eaters and vegetarians
- Donkeys and donkey handlers to transport personal equipment (15 Kg. per person is recommended).

- Food and Drink whilst in Huaraz.
- Entrance to the Huayhuash Nacional Park ($40 USA per person)
- Any extra days at the hostel before or after the expedition.
- Clothes and personal belongings required for the walk (eg water purification tablets)
- Sleeping Bag.

  • ON DAY + 15ºC – 22ºC.
  • ON NIGHT – 4ºC TO - 6ºC.

Recommended gear:
Lightweight walking shoes/sandals/socks/pants/short pants/T-shirts (long sleeve and short sleeve)/sunglasses/sunscreen/plastic bags/warm sleeping bag /light weight trekking boots/wool socks/light weight treeking pants/waterproof pants and jacket/fleece/Goretex/hat/mits or warm gloves/thermal liners/camera/bandana or hat against sun/headlamp with extra batteries.
Safety Individual gear:
Glacier glasses 100% UV with rigid case (2 pair recommended)/ goggles/ sunscreen with maximum protection/lipbalm/4 season sleeping bag/ sleeping pad or thermarest/hat/thermal underwear/fleece jacket/fleece pants/down jacket/Goretex jacket or similar material/2 pairs of gloves or mittens/ pair of thermal glove liners/2 pairs of thermal sock liners/plastic boots/gaiters.
